Kejriwal government will give free sugar to poor families, more than 2.80 lakh people will get benefit


Delhi Cabinet On Free Sugar Proposal: Arvind Kejriwal government will give free sugar to the poor families of Delhi. The Delhi cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, on Thursday (July 20) approved the proposal to provide free sugar to Delhiites. This important step of the government aims to reduce the difficulties faced by poor families and ensure food security for all.

How to deal with food insecurity

Keeping in mind the challenges arising out of the current economic situation and inflation, the Delhi government had taken measures to ensure that no one has to face food insecurity. Under these efforts, NFSA ration was distributed free of cost to PDS beneficiaries from April 2020 to November 2020. It was later extended from May 2021 to May 2022.

Sugar will be provided free of cost to AAY card holders

Apart from wheat, rice, which is available to all NFSA beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), the Delhi government has decided to give free sugar. The Delhi government will provide free sugar under the sugar subsidy scheme to the beneficiaries of Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY). Sugar will be distributed free of cost to AAY card holders for a period of one year from January 2023 to December 2023.

This decision of Delhi government will benefit 2,80,290 beneficiaries

The proposal of free distribution of sugar under the sugar subsidy scheme to the card holders of Antyodaya Anna Yojana category was brought before the cabinet, which has been approved by the cabinet. This decision of the government will benefit about 2,80,290 beneficiaries including 68,747 National Food Security Card holders. An estimated budget of around Rs 1.11 crore would be required for the implementation of this initiative.
