Uproar over Quran burning, protesters set Swedish Embassy on fire in Baghdad


Baghdad Sweden Embassy: Protests in Sweden against the burning of the holy book of Islamic religion, the Quran, are not stopping. According to a Reuters report, hundreds of protesters stormed and set fire to the Swedish embassy in Baghdad on Thursday (July 20) morning.

Reuters quoted sources as saying that no employee of the Swedish Embassy was harmed. However, officials at the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The protests were called by supporters of Shia cleric Muqtada Sadr after the Koran burning in Sweden has already led to widespread protests and condemnation in Muslim-majority countries.

The video was posted by One Baghdad, a popular Telegram channel supporting Shia cleric Muktada Sadr. The video shows people gathering around the embassy at around 1 am on Thursday and about an hour later storming the embassy compound and setting it on fire.

Video belonging to the Swedish embassy in Baghdad showed smoke rising from a building in the embassy compound. Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the video. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was inside the embassy at the time of the attack. Even before this, heads of many countries have warned Sweden on the issue of burning Quran.
