Amidst all this, the support of the Congress to the Aam Aadmi Party against the ordinance brought by the Central Government is also a big political step for the future. This is the reason why the two opposing parties have become allies ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections by supporting AAP on the ordinance despite lakhs of opposition from Delhi Congress leaders.
On behalf of the Delhi unit of the Congress party, the Aam Aadmi Party led by CM Arvind Kejriwal is being opposed continuously on the issue of ordinance. An apology was demanded from the ‘AAP’ supremo for remarks against Congress leaders, especially against former Chief Minister Sheila Dixit. But, despite all these protests, the central leadership of the Congress party bypassed it and decided to go with the Aam Aadmi Party for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Why did Congress take this step?
Actually, this step of the top leadership of the Congress party has not only weakened the morale of the cadre of the party’s Delhi unit, but has also forced many Congress leaders here to rethink their future political steps. The feeling of unease among the party cadres with this move by the top leadership can be clearly felt among the Delhi Congress leaders.
It is believed that the country’s oldest party is currently worried about its political career, because of its dismal performance in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Talking about this step of the Congress, political analyst Ruman Hashmi explains that since the Congress party has been out of power in the country for the last 9 years. In the surveys of all the agencies that are coming, in 2024, it is being predicted that Narendra Modi will be the PM and BJP will come to power again. In such a situation, the Congress party is in a very weak position at this time. Many old party leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad have deserted the ‘Hath’.

Ruman Hashmi says that ever since the Aam Aadmi Party got the status of a national party, its spirits are high. Even during the meeting of opposition leaders in Karnataka, CM Kejriwal’s photo was put in the poster. During the first meeting of the opposition leaders in Patna itself, it was clearly said by the Aam Aadmi Party that the Congress party should clear its stand on the ordinance brought by the Center regarding the rights of Delhi. In such a situation, the Congress was left with no other option.
A big reason for concern among Delhi Congress leaders is that in the 2020 assembly elections, AAP got about 54 percent votes. The BJP had slipped to the second number and the Congress had gone to the third. Whereas, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP was first, Congress was second and ‘AAP’ was at number three. In such a situation, there is definitely concern in the Delhi Congress that despite the shift of votes to the Congress, the Congress could not gain much in terms of getting its seat.
Minority leaders of the Delhi Congress had also cited its support on the proposed Citizen Amendment Bill (CAA) and NRC, while opposing any alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party. The Congress has been opposing both of them and supported the protests against it.
Apparently, at this time Congress is more concerned about its survival rather than saving or increasing its vote share. In such a situation, of course, he immediately made a big sacrifice and may have taken this step risking the displeasure of the leaders of Delhi, but after that there was no other option left.
