Politics heats up on forced conversion of Hindu girl in Pakistan


Pakistan Hindu Minority: There was a heated debate in the Sindh Legislative Assembly of Pakistan on the abduction of a teenage Hindu girl named Sohna Sharma. Sindh province minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla assured the House that the government would take necessary steps to implement the laws meant for minorities. He clearly said that people have a fundamental right to freely choose their religion.

Apart from this, Minister of Sindh province Mukesh Kumar Chawla said in the meeting that no one should be forced to convert under pressure. The assembly session began two hours late under the leadership of Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani. Lal Chand of PPP MPA expressed his displeasure over the abduction of 14 year old Sohna Sharma. Let us tell you that Sohna Sharma is a member of Pakistan’s minority Hindu community.

The voices of minority populations are being silenced

Lal Chand of PPP MPA said during the debate in the assembly that the voice of the minority population is being silenced even on the most minor of issues. Lal Chander then informed the rest of the MPs present in the Parliament that Sharma, a 14-year-old member of their community, had been kidnapped in Qazi Ahmed. It is being proved from her Nikahnama that she had married the person of her choice.

202 incidents of conversion in a year

Pakistan is already grappling with a deteriorating political and economic situation. According to the report of Human Rights Without Frontiers, Pakistan is facing the brunt of forced marriages and conversions. Human Rights Without Frontiers is a Europe-based organization that monitors incidents around the world where people are prevented from exercising their right to freedom of religion or belief.

According to data from the Center for Social Justice, one of the local partners of Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) in Pakistan, 202 incidents were recorded and documented between 2021 and 2022. Almost all of them took place in Sindh and Punjab provinces.
